Jimmy Martins vocals are considered to be ideal for singing Bluegrass music. For anyone who has ever seen him perform live, that is only the beginning. The colorful performer can energize an audience like no other Bluegrass artist. Jimmy Martin was born in Sneedville, Tennessee on August 10, 1927. He grew up playing Bluegrass music in the Cumberland Mountains area of East Tennessee. Thats where many great Bluegrass players learned their trade. That was also the environment where Jimmy would develop his talents. Starday and King Records owner, Moe Lytle, was the first to dub Jimmy Martin The King of Bluegrass. The title stuck until this day, and with good reason. At age 22, Jimmy was playing with the late Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys. After four years, Jimmy left Monroes band, and recorded with the Osborne Brothers for about a year. Then, in 1955, he broke away with his own band, The Sunny Mountain Boys. By then, Jimmy Martin had fully developed his own sound and was poised to record his best songs ever. On this collection of his greatest hits, the King of Bluegrass lives up to his title. Martin recorded these songs on the state-of-the-art equipment at Gusto Studios in Nashville in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Martins classics such as Sunny Side Of The Mountain, Will The Circle Be Unbroken, and his signature hit, Widow Maker, never sounded better.
