COVER NOTES:

Jean Shepard is one of the true Queen of Country Music. A lifetime of experiences, each so rich in Country Music history, tells her story well. Jean was born in Pauls Valley, on November 21, 1933. As she grew up, she listened to recordings by the great Jimmie Rodgers. After her family moved to Visalia, California, Jean blossomed into a blond beauty with a taste for country music. In 1947, while still in high school, Jean formed an all-girl band called the Melody Ranch Girls. A year later they were booked to play a show that headlined Country star Hank Thompson. Thompson was so impressed with Jean that he gave record producers a heads-up to her exceptional talent. Soon Jean was recording songs as a solo artist. By 1953, she had her first #1-Hit song. That unforgettable duet with Ferlin Husky was titled A Dear John Letter. The song is included on this collection, along with the other songs that make Jean Shepard one of the standout female Country recording artists of all time. During her lengthy career which spans 50 years in the Country Music spotlight, Jean has played a major role in the preservation of the Traditional Country Music that she loves. Jean was also the wife of fellow Country star, Hawkshaw Hawkins, until he was killed in the tragic, 1963 plane crash that also claimed the lives of Country legends Patsy Cline and Cowboy Copas. A mark of Jean Shepards greatness is that she has indeed stood the test of time. Jean is still one of the fans all-time favorites at the Grand Ole Opry.
