COVER NOTES;

---WHEN BLUES WERE KING---

The year was 1944. A record store owner named Syd Nathan started a music company in Cincinnati, Ohio. He called his company King Records. In his own words, it would be King of them all. Indeed, King Records would take the lead as it produced and released some of the best Rhythm & Blues music of all time. Sixty years later, King Records current owner, Moe Lytle, is dedicated to keeping the gold mine of Kings vintage Original Blues Recordings available to the public.

Wynonie Harris is the man we remember as Mr. Blues. There may be good reason to consider him the The Father of Rock-N-Roll as well. Wynonie will go down in history as the man that cleared the way for the Rock era. His 1948 #1 hit recording, Good Rockin Tonight, had been written and recorded by Roy Brown in 1947 on the DeLuxe label. King Records owner, Syd Nathan, purchased DeLuxe with a priority of obtaining Browns talents, along with his song. Nathan then signed Wynonie Harris to a King contract and immediately had Harris record it. It was a good call. Wynonies signature shoutin vocals was the perfect marriage with the song that Brown had written. In a very real sense, the dawn of Rock-N-Roll shed its early light when Wynonies song climbed to #1 and stayed in the charts for 25 weeks. During his prime years with King, 1948 thru 1952, Mr. Blues consistently shouted his way to the top of the charts and became the top selling artist among his peers. The risque´ content of many of Wynonies songs, and other King artists as well, was evident in the dual-meaning of titles such as Lolly Pop Mama (1948), or I Like My Babys Pudding (1950). They are Wynonie Harris classics that earned him his title, Mr. Blues. Wynonies vocals, style and rockin attitude are what made him a legend.

King Records Original Blues Recordings were a major influence on much of todays music. The Blues evolved into Rock-N-Roll, and Rock evolved into Hip-Hop. The music vaults at King Records are still brimming with those landmark artists and songs that got it all started over half-a-century ago. After all these years, the Blues are still King.
