COVER NOTES:

It has been a long journey, from those early days of obscure mountain music, to the current, enormous popularity Bluegrass music enjoys today. That is why it is fitting to title this Best Of Bluegrass collection, Long Journey Home, after Larry Sparks classic recording. Sparks is a second generation, Bluegrass traditionalist whose music has stood the test of time. Reno & Smiley are two great, first-generation pioneers of Bluegrass music. They recorded most of their songs with King Records from 1951 to 1964. One of those songs, Freight Train Boogie, is included here. Stringbean, with his hilarious long-bodied, short-legged outfit, was the most recognizable character on the Grand Ole Opry. Here, Stringbean plays the hillbilly classic, Good Old Mountain Dew. Jimmy Martin was first deemed the King of Bluegrass by Gusto Records owner, Moe Lytle, in the late 1970s. Here Jimmy showcases what many believe to be the perfect Bluegrass vocals on Will You Be Lovin Another Man. One of everyones old favorites is the age-old song, John Henry. The fabulous Bluegrass brother duo of Moore & Napier sing their hearts out on this classic tune. Lester Flatt is one Bluegrass player whose name is almost a household word. He first found fame along with Earl Scruggs as the famous Flatt & Scruggs duo. Here, Lester sings Yonder Stands Little Maggie. The Country Gentlemen, whose core make-up includes Charlie Waller, Doyle Lawson and Bill Yates, are characterized by Wallers folksy vocals. Many great Bluegrass players have been schooled as members of the Country Gentlemen over the years. When listening to their song, Nobodys Business, it is easy to see why. The Stanley Brothers are two other great vintage pioneers from that first generation of Bluegrass players. Brothers Ralph & Carter recorded milestone Blue grass Songs with Starday and King Records from 1958 thru 1965. One of those, Pig In A Pen, is included here. Jim Eanes was one artist known for his mellow approach to Bluegrass music. The approach worked well and kept him popular for over 50 years. Here, Eanes highlights his instrumental skills on Bending The Strings. The great Hylo Borwn & the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers, will cap off this collection of Bluegrass classics with an old Bluegrass favorite, Little Footprints In The Snow.
