COVER NOTES:

There is something intensely spiritual about a Stanley Brothers Gospel song. Their close vocal harmonies and, often ethereal, delivery is characteristic of the artful, world-renowned Bluegrass duo. Ralph and Carter Stanley were raised in the Clinch Mountain area of Virginia where they were born. After a lifetime of performing together, the Stanley Brothers recorded the bulk of their music on the Starday and King Record labels from 1958-1965. The songs included on this collection were selected from the many Gospel recordings the Stanleys made during those years. The prolific achievements of the Stanley Brothers, besides their many Bluegrass recordings that are now considered Bluegrass standards, include their induction into the Bluegrass Hall of Honor in 1992. Unfortunately, Carter Stanley died at the young age of 41 in 1966. Ralph Stanley, in addition to his important role as one of the Stanley Brothers, has carved a niche for himself in the modern history of Bluegrass music as well. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Lincoln Memorial University in 1976, the Living Legen medal in 2000 fro the Library of Congress, and The Living Achievement Award from the North American Folk Alliance in 2003. His many music awards include three Grammys , the last of which he received in 2003 for Best Bluegrass Album. In recent years, the publics interest in Bluegrass music has skyrocketed to a level of appreciation that would have surprised even the Stanley Brothers at the time they made their final recordings together for Starday and King. The beloved old genre of mountain songs that everyone now appreciates as Bluegrass music would not be what it is today if it had been for the pioneering role of the Stanley Brothers. Much of the groundwork for todays Bluegrass Music was laid by these great patriarchs of Bluegrass as they played the traditional Gospel music that was, most assuredly, closest to their hearts.
