COVER NOTES:

Wynonie Harris is Mr. Blues. He first gained notoriety with record buyers after they heard his growling vocals on Lucky Millenders 1944 #1 hit, Who Threw The Whiskey In the Well. But it was Wynonies legendary #1 Hit, Good RockinTonight, that secured his permanent place in Blues history. Wynonie recorded the song on Syd Nathans King Record label, in December, 1947 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Nathan was known for signing diverse acts to his newly formed label, and Wynonie certainly fit that mold. Nathan first met with raucous Blues man in a hotel room. Wynonie was drinking with three of his lady friends. After a night-long discussion with Nathan, Wynonie signed a record contract with King. During his King years, 1947 to 1954, Wynonie recorded sixteen Top-10 hits with the label. Ten of those songs are included on this collection. Wynoniess enormous success with King made him one of the hightest paid Blues artists of his day. During the mid-1950's, Wynonie claimed to make as much as $1500.00 a week for his appearances. Sadly, cancer claimed the pioneer Bluesmans life at age 53 in 1969. The magic of Wynonie Harris music goes beyond his ability to record hit records. Wynonies style set him apart from the other Blues artist of his day. He was a shouter and a swinger, in a league of his own. It is interesting that Wynonie recorded Good Rockin Tonight, ten years before Elvis Presley recorded the same song at one of those famous Sun Records recording sessions in Memphis. Wynonie Harris, Mr. Blues, had already been Rockin and -rollin years before anyone knew what to call it.
